Martis

Durham, N.C. — The contract of Lincoln Saltdogs RHP Shairon Martis has been purchased by the Baltimore Orioles organization, the American Association announced on Friday.

Martis is coming off a noteworthy World Baseball Classic performance for the Kingdom of the Netherlands squad, appearing in four of the team’s seven games and going 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA over six innings, allowing just three hits. Martis also pitched in the 2006 and 2013 WBCs, tossing a seven-inning no-hitter against Panama in the 2006 tournament. The native of Willemstad, Curacao, was one of five current or former Lincoln players on the 2017 Dutch roster.

In two seasons with Lincoln, Martis, 30, has been a versatile workhorse for the Saltdogs staff, logging 227.1 innings as both a starter and a reliever while registering 15 wins and fanning 172 hitters.

Martis is entering the 12th season of his professional baseball career, which includes 26 big-league games in 2008-09 with Washington, and in 2013 with Minnesota. Originally signed by the San Francisco Giants in 2005, he has also spent time in the Pittsburgh Pirates system.
