MARTINEZ NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Gary SouthShore RailCats INF Frank Martinez (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending July 31.

Martinez hit .400 (10-for-25) this week, helping the RailCats win five of their seven games played. He collected two doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI in the span. The Dominican Republic native began his week on Monday going 1-for-5 with two RBI in a 5-4 loss to the Kansas City T-Bones on the road. Martinez drove in three on Tuesday, part of a 1-for-2 line that also included a run scored in a 7-2 win. The RailCats took the series with a 7-3 win on Wednesday, and Martinez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Gary SouthShore continued their trip on Thursday, heading to face the Texas AirHogs in Amarillo, Tex. Martinez once again went 2-for-4, hitting his first double of the week and scoring two runs in a 10-5 win. The RailCats beat the AirHogs for the second game in a row in game one of a Saturday doubleheader, a 7-5 win. Martinez hit a sacrifice fly and solo home run in the game, but went 0-for-3 in a 9-1 loss in the nightcap. He ended his week in style, going 3-for-4 with a double, home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 9-8 win on Sunday.

Martinez is now batting .278 in 42 games with the RailCats this season. He has eight doubles, two triples, four home runs and 33 RBI. Martinez has also played with the Sioux Falls Canaries this season, batting .215 in 22 games, collecting four doubles and four home runs to go with 15 RBI.

Martinez comes to the American Association after a five-year stint in the Frontier League. He put together his best season in 2014 with the Southern Illinois Miners, batting .317 in 80 games, driving in 64 runs. Prior to joining the independent ranks, Martinez played six seasons in the Oakland Athletics’ system. He reached as high as the Class AA Midland (Tex.) RockHounds, where he played 14 games in 2008.

The RailCats return from the All-Star Break on Thursday to face the Winnipeg Goldyes at home. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. Central time, and the game will air live and for free at www.americanassociationbaseball.tv.
