MADDOX’S HR, FOUR RBI LEAD RAILCATS

Maddox Action

August 28 Night Recap

Box Scores

Gary SouthShore 10, Kansas City 4

The RailCats took another step toward securing the American Association wild card with a 10-4 win over Kansas City. Gary SouthShore won for the seventh time in its last 10 games after exploding out of the gates with six runs in the first inning.

Craig Maddox and Brian Kolb, who led the RailCats’ offense, made useful contributions in the first inning. After Reid Fronk put the first run on the board with a single, Maddox doubled home Fronk and Cristian Guerrero. Kolb followed immediately after with an RBI single that brought Maddox home.

Maddox delivered another blow in the sixth inning with a two-run home run to finish 3-for-4 with a team-high four RBI. Kolb was the next-most productive RailCats hitter. The third baseman was 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Amarillo 12, Fargo-Moorhead 2

Amarillo’s offense came seemingly out of nowhere in the seventh inning. Trailing 2-1, the Sox plated nine runs on eight hits to beat Fargo-Moorhead, 12-2.

The Sox’s rally was never powerful, but it was certainly consistent. Amarillo tallied just one extra-base hit in the inning and scoried their runs on six RBI singles and an error. Jorge Delgado delivered a pair of run-scoring hits in the seventh, while Chris Valencia and Joe Weik each struck for two-run singles.

Winnipeg 9, St. Paul 2

Ray Sadler’s hot bat and Chris Salamida’s seven strong innings on the hill propelled Winnipeg to a 9-2 victory over St. Paul. Sadler homered and doubled to drive in a team-high four runs, while Salamida held the Saints to two runs on five hits to improve to 7-0.

Sadler helped the Goldeyes open the scoring when he doubled to left field in the fourth. The two-bagger scored both Yurendell de Caster and Ryan Scoma to start a four-run inning. In the seventh inning, Sadler came through again. This time, the left fielder hit a two-run home run for his 23rd of the season.

As for Salamida, his first six innings were nearly flawless. He surrendered just two hits and faced two batters above the minimum. Though St. Paul broke through with two runs on three hits in the seventh inning, the left-hander still won his ninth consecutive decision, dating back to last September. It was also Salamida’s sixth straight start with two or fewer runs against.

Sioux Falls 5, Sioux City 3

Jared Clark went 3-for-4 with his 20th home run of the season to lead Sioux Falls to a 5-3 victory over Sioux City. The third baseman went deep in the second inning to tie the score and gave the Canaries the lead the following inning with an RBI single. Clark capped his three-RBI night in the seventh inning with a single that scored Tim Pahuta for an insurance run.

On the mound, right-hander Kyle Vazquez picked up his first win of the season as a starter. Vazquez pitched six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. Alan DeRatt earned his 21st save with a perfect ninth inning that included two strikeouts.

Grand Prairie 5, El Paso 4

El Paso put the tying-run on second base in a near ninth-inning comeback, but Grand Prairie closer Patrick Mincey closed the door just in time. Mincey nailed down his 22nd save for a 5-4 AirHogs win.

The Diablos’ rally heightened the importance of an eighth-inning home run by AirHogs DH Palmer Karr. With one on and one out, Karr drilled his 10th home run of the season to expand Grand Prairie’s lead to three runs. After El Paso mounted a charge in the ninth, Karr’s homer stood up as the deciding factor in the game.
