LINCOLN WALKS OFF ON JOYNT DOUBLE

Lincoln 4, Fargo-Moorhead 3 (10 Innings)Box

An RBI double from Brian Joynt in the bottom of the 10th inning allowed the Lincoln Saltdogs to walk off with a 4-3 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. With men on first and double, Joynt became the hero of the night by driving in Curt Smith. Earlier in the game, Smith had knocked the ball out of the park for two RBIs. But before the extra inning, Fargo-Moorhead had actually staged a late rally with runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tie it at 3 apiece from Joe Bonfe and Chad Mozingo RBI doubles.

Pitching was solid for both teams. Lincoln’s starter, Zach Varce, pitched seven innings while allowing just one run. For the RedHawks, RHP Michael Noteware pitched two innings in relief and kept the scoreboard clean.

Kansas City 3, New Jersey 2 (Game 1 – 7 innings) – Box

The Kansas City T-Bones edged out the New Jersey Jackals 3-2 in the first game of an interleague doubleheader. In the first, Kansas City scored twice off a double from RF Adam Bailey and a single from LF Kyle Robinson. New Jersey scratched back a run in the bottom of the inning with a 3B Mark Threlkeld RBI single, and the Jackals would tie in the second inning. Four of the five runs in the game occurred in the first two innings, but after that the game became a stalemate until late. Robinson would play hero in the sixth inning as he drove in the winning run for the T-Bones.

Robinson finished the game 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, while Bailey finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. RHP Fernando Hernandez recorded the save after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Kansas City 7, New Jersey 1 (Game 2 – 7 innings) – Box

Kansas City found more success offensively in Game 2 while continuing a strong pitching effort to beat New Jersey 7-1. The T-Bones got off to a quick start for the second game in a row with five runs in the first two innings. LF Kyle Robinson continued his strong hitting by hitting a double in the first inning that scored one earned run and two unearned runs. RBI singles from C Alex Marquez and CF Robby Kuzdale brought in a couple more runs to extend the T-Bones’ lead throughout the game.

The Kansas City starting pitcher, Kris Regas, only lasted three innings but didn’t allow a run in his action. Derek Loera came in to relieve Regas and allowed just one run in the final four innings. Though the offense wasn’t there for New Jersey, a bright spot was reliever Francisco Gracesqui, who pitched the last two innings and had five strikeouts in his six outs.

Laredo 4, Joplin 2Box

The Laredo Lemurs rallied with three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Joplin Blasters 4-2. Joplin led 2-1 for most of the game, in part thanks to a 1B-C Carlos Ramirez solo homer in the fourth inning. Neither team would score in the middle innings, but Laredo would find some late-inning magic. 3B Juan Silverio led off the ninth with a solo home run to cut the deficit to just one. The Blasters would record two outs, but two errors kept the Lemurs alive, and they would capitalize. RF Kevin Taylor hit a single to bring in two runs to take the lead.

Laredo’s starter, Omar Bencomo, wouldn’t get the win, but his seven innings and one run allowed kept his team in it until the end. Joan Montero came in for two outs, and then John Brebbia, who got the win, closed out the final 1.1 innings.

Winnipeg 5, Gary SouthShore 1Box

Strong pitching and a four-run inning propelled the Winnipeg Goldeyes to a 5-1 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats. The Goldeyes’ starter was Coby Cowgill, and he turned in quite the dominant performance. He pitched 7.2 innings and struck out six, and he allowed just one run. LHP Brendan Lafferty came in to shut the door for the final four outs and did just that.

With the score still 0-0 in the fifth, RF Brady Wilson hit an RBI double to score Winnipeg’s first run. The next batter, CF Adam Heisler, would drive Wilson home with a single. Later in the inning, back-to-back singles from Jon Weber and SS Josh Mazzola brought in two more runs. DH Jon Jones would drive home the only run for the RailCats in the eighth inning.

Grand Prairie 7, Amarillo 5Box

Though both teams ended up with 12 hits, Grand Prairie came out on top with the 7-5 win over Amarillo. The AirHogs got off to a quick start with a two-run homer from 1B Victor Diaz in the first inning. Amarillo would respond with one run thanks to a SS Juan Martinez single. In the third inning, Grand Prairie scored once and Amarillo scored twice, tying the game at 3-3. The AirHogs created some separation in the fourth inning with three unanswered runs off singles from RF Josh Eatherly and CF Ronnie Richardson. The Thunderheads would again try to rally in the fifth inning when DH Stefan Gartrell hit a two-run homer, but they couldn’t score anymore.

Neither team’s starters pitched very well, but several relievers did. Kyle Bellows pitched two scoreless innings and Randy Hamrick had another for Amarillo. A trio for Grand Prairie – Colin Allen, TyRelle Harris and Zachary Dando – each pitched a scoreless inning.
