Kane County 3, Chicago 0 – Box Score

The Kane County Cougars (1-1) earned their first win as a member of the American Association with a 3-0 shutout victory against the Chicago Dogs (1-1) on Wednesday.

The Cougars took the lead in the bottom of the first inning as CF Anfernee Seymour scored when 1B Nick Zammarelli bounced out. In the second, SS Galli Cribbs Jr. tripled home LF Mark Karaviotis and then scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. Those would be the only runs of the game but were more than enough as the Cougars’ pitching staff allowed just four hits on the night.

The Dogs only had a runner on third base twice in the game, including in the top of the ninth when 1B K.C. Hobson drew a walk, took second when C Ryan Lidge singled and then moved to third on a wild pitch. But Hobson was stuck there when LF Anfernee Grier struck out to end the game.

Starter Vance Worley earned the win as he tossed 5.2 innings and gave up two hits while striking out four batters. Reliever Jamal Wade picked up the save as he worked the eighth and ninth innings and gave up one hit and struck out three batters.

A three-run sixth inning made the difference as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (1-1) topped the Cleburne Railroaders 4-1.

Cleburne struck first with a solo home run from RF Hunter Clanin in the third inning. In the fifth, the RedHawks tied things up when SS Sam Dexter (3-for-4) scored on a sac fly from LF Jordan George (2-for-4). In the next frame, 3B Leobaldo Pina hit a two-run home run and Dexter hit an RBI double to plate C Dylan Kelly.

Starting pitcher Kevin Herget tossed seven innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out 10 batters on the way to earning the win. Reliever Ryan Flores struck out all three batters he placed in the eighth inning and Blake Rogers worked the ninth to pick up the save.

Lincoln 2, Kansas City 1 (6 Innings/Rain Shortened) – Box Score

The Lincoln Saltdogs (2-0) picked up a 2-1 win against the Kansas City T-Bones in a rain-shortened affair on Wednesday evening.

The Dogs drew first blood in the top of the first as LF Justin Byrd (2-for-2) hit a lead-off double and then scored on a wild pitch later in the frame. In the third, 3B Ryan Long hit a lead-off triple and came home when Byrd singled two batters later.

In the fifth, Kansas City got on the board as C Morgan McCullough (2-for-2) singled to score LF Colin Willis but that would be the only run the Monarchs scored before the rain brought the night to an early end. Lincoln’s starter Johnny Barbato bagged the win on the mound as he worked all five innings and allowed just five hits while striking out six batters.

Milwaukee 6, Gary SouthShore 4 – Box Score

The Milwaukee Milkmen (2-0) used a late offensive push to slide past the Gary SouthShore RailCats 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams found the scoreboard in the fourth inning as 2B Aaron Hill hit a two-run shot in the top half and LF Raymond Jones answered with a two-run homer of his own in the home half. Through two games, Hill has already matched his home run total of three from last season.

In the seventh, the Milkmen inched in front as RF Tony Rosselli (2-for-5) singled home 3B Logan Trowbridge and in the next inning, CF Brett Vertigan (3-for-5) added an RBI single that scored SS Mason Davis (2-for-5). The Milkmen added two more runs in the ninth as Rosselli and 1B David Washington hit back-to-back home runs.

The RailCats (0-2) threatened in the bottom of the ninth as RF Zach Welz (3-for-5) singled home both 3B Phil Caulfield and SS Nikola Vasic (3-for-5) to pull within two runs but Jones bounced out in the next at-bat to end the game.

Sioux City 7, Houston 2 – Box Score

A hot start gave the Sioux City Explorers (2-0) all the offense they needed as they pushed past the Houston Apollos 7-2.

The Explorers posted five runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to three home runs. SS Nate Samson and 1B Jared Walker each hit two-run shots and LF Lane Milligan (2-for-4) added a two-out solo shot to cap the rally. In the third, Sioux City added two more runs as C Mitch Ghelfi doubled to right field to allow Milligan and CF Chase Harris to score.

Both of the Apollos’ runs came in the fourth when 3B Ian Yetsko hit a two-run home run that also scored DH Mike Annone (2-for-3).
