Nashville, Tenn. — Three American Association alumni were chosen in the Triple-A phase of today’s Rule 5 Draft at the Baseball Winter Meetings: RHP John Brebbia, C Micah Gibbs (pictured) and RHP Patrick Johnson.
- Brebbia (Sioux Falls ’14, Laredo ’15) was selected by St. Louis from Arizona, after having his contracted purchased by the Lemurs from the Diamondbacks in September. Brebbia set a Laredo franchise record with 19 saves, tied for fifth-most in the league, to go along with a 7-2 record and a miniscule 0.98 ERA. He was also named the MVP of the American Association championship series, earning the save in the Lemurs’ wins in Games 2 and 3.
- Gibbs (Grand Prairie ’13) was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers from Kansas City. He split the 2015 season between Double-A and Triple-A in the Royals’ system, hitting .291 with four doubles and eight RBI in 19 games with Double-A Northwest Arkansas of the Texas League.
- Johnson (Sioux City ’14-’15) was selected by Miami from Pittsburgh. The Pirates had purchased Johnson’s contract from the Explorers three weeks ago, capping off a spectacular season which saw the 2015 American Association Pitcher of the Year go 15-1 with a 2.08 ERA, third-best in the AA, and 132 strikeouts, second-most in the loop. The 15 victories tied the league record for most wins in a season.
