Durham, N.C. — The contract of Laredo Lemurs RHP Kamakani Usui was purchased by the San Francisco Giants organization, the American Association announced on Monday.

Usui had an strong season out of the bullpen for Laredo in 2016, appearing in 41 games and assembling a 4-4 record with a 3.24 ERA. The Honolulu native fanned 48 hitters in 41.2 innings of work while limiting opponents to a .195 batting average.

The 26-year-old also spent the 2015 season in independent baseball, splitting time between Amarillo of the American Association and Schaumburg of the Frontier League. Previously, Usui spent two seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization after playing collegiately at Vanguard (Calif.) University.

Usui is the fourth Laredo player to have his contract purchased by a major-league organization in 2016, joining RHP Matt Sergey (Oakland), 3B Travis Denker (Arizona) and RHP Kyle Winkler (Tampa Bay).
