GARY’S MAHONEY TO JOIN YANKEES’ ORGANIZATION

Durham, N.C. — The American Association announced on Wednesday that the contract of Gary SouthShore RailCats INF Spencer Mahoney has been purchased by the New York Yankees’ organization. The Yankees intend to convert Mahoney into a righthanded pitcher.
Mahoney spent his first season in professional baseball in 2015, splitting time between the RailCats and Schaumburg of the Frontier League. While with Gary, the native of LaGrange Park, Ill., hit .267 with two doubles and five RBI in 19 games. Previously, Mahoney played collegiately at Valparaiso, hitting .326 with three home runs, 28 RBI and nine stolen bases as a senior.
The 22-year-old is the first Gary player to be sold to a major-league organization in 2015, and the 14th American Association player overall.
