GARTRELL HITS WALKOFF HOME RUN TO LIFT THUNDERHEADS

Amarillo 5, Wichita 4Box Score

With the score tied at four in the bottom of the ninth, LF Stefan Gartrell ended the game with one swing as he hit a walkoff home run to give the Amarillo Thunderheads a 5-4 win over the Wichita Wingnuts.

The blast was Gartrell’s sixth of the season and he was one of five Thunderheads to have a multi-hit game. C Corey Bass and 2B Juan Martinez head went 3-for-5 to lead the team. For the Wingnuts 1B Matt Padgett went 2-for-3 with three RBI to pace his team.

The Thunderheads racked up 14 hits in the game and the Amarillo pitching staff held the Wingnuts to just five hits. Reliever Randy Hamrick earned the win on the mound as he worked the ninth inning without allowing a hit.

 

Fargo-Moorhead 8, St Paul 7 (11 innings)  — Box Score

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks came back from an early 4-0 hole and ended up taking an 8-7 win in 11 innings over the St. Paul Saints.

The game was tied at seven after nine innings of play and stayed there until the top of the 11th. 1B Joe Bonfe started the inning on second base per league rule and scored the eventually game-winning run as RF Joe Dunigan singled to center field to lead off the inning. In addition to scoring the game-winning run, Bonfe went 3-for-5 at the plate and had four RBI including a three-run home run in the eighth inning. 2B Frank Salerno added a pair of hits for the RedHawks.

For the Saints, three batters had home runs, including LF Willie Argo who went 3-for-5.

 

Joplin 6, Lincoln 0  — Box Score

The Joplin Blasters pitching staff combined to shut out the Lincoln Saltdogs and paved the way for a 6-0 win.

Starting pitcher Jorge Martinez picked up the win as he went 7.1 innings and allowed just seven hits. He didn’t issue a walk and he struck out six batters. Reliever Jesus Colome finished off the eighth inning without allowing a hit and reliever Victor Capellan closed things out in the ninth and preserved the shutout.

Offensively, CF Oscar Mesa and C Yenier Bello each had one RBI and RF Jesus Solorzano had a pair. 1B Carlos Ramirez had a team-high two hits. For the Saltdogs, both CF Jon Gaston and SS Mike Gilmartin went 2-for-4.

 

Laredo 4, Grand Prairie 1  — Box Score

The Laredo Lemurs scored three unanswered in the final five innings to take care of the Grand Prairie AirHogs 4-1.

The Lemurs and the AirHogs were tied at one after four innings thanks to a solo home run by SS Jeudy Valdez, who was 3-for-4 on the night, and an RBI single by 1B Victor Diaz. But Laredo took the lead for good in the fifth as CF Dvontrey Richardson had an RBI single and then scored on a single by 2B Abel Nieves. Nieves singled home Valdez in the seventh for an extra insurance run.

Starting pitcher Luis Pollorena was the winner on the mound as he went 7.2 innings and allowed one run on eight hits and issued just one walk. Reliever John Brebbia earned a five-out save and allowed just one hit while striking out a pair.

 

Kansas City 9, Gary SouthShore 4  — Box Score

The Kansas City T-Bones put up five runs in the first inning and never looked back as they toppled the Gary SouthShore RailCats 9-4.

2B Ryan Cavan singled in the T-Bones’ first at bat of the game and then came around to score on a single from 1B Jake Blackwood two batters later. After a sac fly by DH Adam Bailey, Blackwood and SS Vladamir Frias both score on a double by C Brian Erie. Erie scored on the next play when LF Jacob Hayes doubled to cap the five-run rally. For the game, all nine T-Bones had hits and both 3B Nate Tenbrink and CF Robby Kuzdale each had three hits in the game.

For the RailCats, LF Tillman Pugh and 2B Zac Mitchell each went 2-for-4 and Mitchell as well as RF Drew Martinez had RBI.

 

Sioux City 6, Sioux Falls 1  — Box Score

The Sioux City Explorers took control of their contest with the Sioux Falls Canaries with a big fourth inning and the pitching staff took care of the rest as they won 6-1.

In the fourth inning, DH Matt Koch knocked in the first runs of the game with a singled that plated a pair of unearned runs. C Dillon Usiak added a sacrifice fly and then Koch scored on an error and LF Tim Colwell had a sac fly of his own. In the eighth, LF Brian Humphries reached on an error and that allowed C Tyler Shover to score for the Canaries’ only run of the game. In the bottom of the inning, 3B Tommy Mendonca singled to score SS Noah Perio.

Starting pitcher John Straka was the winner on the mound as he went 7.2 innings and allowed just one unearned run on six hits. He walked just one batter and struck out 11 batters.

 

Ottawa 3, Winnipeg 2 (Suspended in fifth inning)

The game between the Ottawa Champions and the Winnipeg Goldeyes was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning due to rain. The Champions were leading 3-2 when the game was called. The remainder of the game will be played tomorrow starting at 1:35 p.m. Central Time. The regularly scheduled game will now be a seven-inning game.
