Sioux Falls 7, Sioux City 6 (11 innings) – Box
Sioux Falls RF Steve Tinoco launched a solo homer over the right field fence in the bottom of the 11th, and the Canaries walked off on Sioux City, winning 7-6.
Tinoco’s blast was the second heroic homer of the night for Sioux Falls, as 1B A.J. Kirby-Jones kept the Canaries alive with a home run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at six. Kirby-Jones also hit a game-tying three-run homer in the bottom of the third, which brought Sioux Falls even with the X’s, 4-4.
Canaries CF Chris Valencia gave Sioux Falls a 5-4 lead in the fifth with an RBI double, but Sioux City C Dillon Usiak tied the game in the top of the sixth with an RBI single.
The Explorers took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth on DH Brock Kjeldgaard’s bases-loaded walk only for Kirby-Jones’s homer to send the game to extras. Right-hander Alan DeRatt picked up the win after keeping the Explorers scoreless in the 10th and 11th.
Winnipeg 6, New Jersey 0 – Box
Winnipeg right-hander Ethan Hollingsworth threw a complete-game two-hitter, shutting out the New Jersey Jackals in a 6-0 win.
Hollingsworth (7-1, 3.63 ERA) struck out five and walked one in his first shutout of the season.
The Goldeyes provided plenty of run support for Hollingsworth early, scoring six runs in the first five innings.
In the bottom of the first, CF Reggie Abercrombie singled home a run, and Winnipeg scored two more in the second on RF Ryan Pineda’s solo homer and 3B Jake Blackwood’s dash to the plate on a wild pitch. Blackwood and DH Casey Haerther led the Goldeyes with three hits each.
The Goldeyes kept it going in the fourth, scoring two on SS Tyler Kuhn’s RBI single and an RBI groundout from Abercrombie, who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. C Luis Alen rounded out the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.
Grand Prairie 4, Laredo 2 – Box
After falling behind in the top of the sixth, AirHogs DH Brian Myrow answered with a go-ahead, two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, and Grand Prairie beat Laredo, 4-2.
Grand Prairie C Brian Peterson drove in the game’s first run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single, but the Lemurs scored two in the sixth on 3B Harrison Kain’s RBI triple and a sacrifice fly from CF Nick Van Stratten. Peterson had a team-high three hits.
Myrow’s homer gave Grand Prairie the lead for good as LF Madison Carter added an RBI single in the seventh, and closer Dakota Watts pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to lock down the win and his 20th save.
AirHogs starter Bennett Whitmore got the win after allowing two runs on two hits in six innings.
Rockland 4, Fargo-Moorhead 3 – Box
The Rockland Boulders survived a bumpy ninth inning to take down the RedHawks, 4-3.
The Boulders led 4-1, heading to the ninth, when closer Chad Robinson entered and walked the first two batters he faced. Fargo-Moorhead 2B Frank Salerno made it 4-3 with a two-RBI double, but Robinson got the final two outs to convert the save.
Rockland starter Richard Salazar struck out seven in seven innings, allowing one run on five hits to pick up the win — his ninth of the year.
The Boulders took the lead in a three-run bottom of the fourth, getting RBI singles from 1B Jerod Edmondson, DH Stephen Cardullo, and C Marcus Nidiffer. Cardullo led the Boulders with three hits, and Edmondson had a team-high two RBIs, with his second coming on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
For the RedHawks, SS Zach Penprase and CF Nic Jackson each had two hits, and Jackson plated the team’s first run in the top of the sixth on an RBI triple.
Amarillo 6, Kansas City 5 – Box
Kansas City scored five runs in the first inning, but Amarillo chipped away at the T-Bones’ lead, coming back to win, 6-5.
The T-Bones chased Amarillo starter Chandler Barnard before the right-hander could record an out, stringing together a walk and five hits to score five quick runs in the first. Kansas City 1B Matt Padgett, who went 4-for-4, had a two-RBI single during the rally.
The Amarillo bats went to work in the second, though, loading the bases with no outs for C Jeff Farnham, who singled in a run, and CF Jason Martin who got a run home despite hitting into a double play.
Amarillo loaded the bases with no outs again in the third, and DH Kyle Nichols scored a run by drawing a walk before another one-out, bases-loaded double play, this time from 1B Andres Rodriguez, made it 5-4.
By the middle of the fourth, Kansas City’s five-run lead was gone after RF Joe Weik drove in the go-ahead run with a two-RBI single to right field, giving the Sox a 6-5 lead that would hold up for the win.
In relief of Barnard, right-hander Derek Blacksher shined, allowing just two hits in seven innings. The game’s winning pitcher struck out six and walked none. Randy Hamrick entered in the ninth, striking out two to pick up his sixth save.
Wichita 15, Lincoln 10 – Box
Wichita bested Lincoln, 15-10, in a slugfest, which featured 31 hits, including 13 extra-base hits.
The Wingnuts, the American Association’s top team at 61-26, fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first before answering with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. The first six Wichita batters reached base, and CF Brent Clevlen drove in the team’s first runs with a two-RBI single. 2B Abel Nieves followed with a two-RBI double and DH Carlo Testa and 3B Chris McClendon each added additional RBI doubles to make it 6-3 after the first inning.
McClendon batted 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and a team-high four RBIs, and Testa went 3-for-4, including a fifth-inning solo homer, with four runs scored, two RBIs and a walk.
The Saltdogs kept pace with Wichita’s offense and took a 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh on a three-run home run from CF Jon Gaston, who had two hits and four RBIs in the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Wingnuts responded with four runs, taking back the lead on SS Ryan Khoury’s run-scoring fielder’s choice.
Wichita added three more in the eighth to make it 15-10 on the way to the team’s fifth-straight win.
Gary SouthShore 4, St. Paul 2 – Box
Gary SouthShore C Ryan Babineau drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, and the RailCats downed St. Paul, 4-2.
The RailCats trailed 2-1 entering the sixth, but RF Drew Martinez scored SS Daniel Pulfer with an RBI double to tie the game, and Babineau gave Gary SouthShore the lead. Babineau and Pulfer led the RailCats with two hits.
3B Jose Garcia scored an insurance run on an error to give the RailCats a 4-2 lead, and left-hander Andy Loomis recorded a four-out save to put the Saints away.
RailCats’ righty Stephen Hiscock turned in a quality start, scattering one run on nine hits across six innings for his ninth win of the season. Gary SouthShore now trails first-place Lincoln by just 1/2 a game in the Central Division.
Saints 3B Henry Wrigley had a game-high three hits in the loss.
