CANARIES’ FORMER MAJOR LEAGUER, NIETO, HEADED TO MARLINS ORGANIZATION

MOORHEAD, MINN. – The Sioux Falls Canaries have sold the contract of C Adrian Nieto to the Miami Marlins’ organization, the American Association announced Friday, June 22. Nieto is the 28th  American Association player to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization in 2019.

Nieto signed with the Canaries on March 19 after spending 2018 with the Kansas City T-Bones. The 29-year-old former major leaguer was hitting .269 on the season with four home runs and 24 RBIs for Sioux Falls. Nieto helped deliver the T-Bones an American Association championship in 2018, putting together a postseason average of .313 with two home runs and five RBIs while catching all nine postseason games.

The La Habana, Cuba native began his professional career in 2008 after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. Nieto spent six seasons in the Nationals’ organization before debuting with the Chicago White Sox in 2014. In his one season at the big-league level, Nieto hit .236 while belting two home runs and driving in seven runs over 48 games.
