Durham, N.C. — The contract of Gary SouthShore RailCats OF Anthony Cheky was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks’ organization on Wednesday, the league announced.
Cheky joined the RailCats at the end of the 2015 season, appearing in three games and going 3-for-8 with a double and 3 RBI. Previously, the native of Portage, Ind., played collegiately at Michigan State, where he was a four-year starter and led the Big Ten in stolen bases twice. For the Spartans in 2015, Cheky appeared in 42 games, hitting .312 with 22 RBI, 20 runs scored and 12 stolen bases.
Cheky is the second Gary SouthShore rookie to have his contract purchased by a major-league organization in less than two weeks. RailCats INF Spencer Mahoney was picked up by the New York Yankees’ organization on November 18.
