AMARILLO’S WEIK SOLD TO LOS ANGELES ANGELS OF ANAHEIM

DURHAM, NC- The contract of Amarillo Sox OF Joe Weik (pictured) was purchased by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim today, May 22. Weik is expected to be assigned to the high-A Inland Empire 66ers of the California League, who open a series at the Lancaster JetHawks Friday evening.

Weik is hitting .304 (7-for-23) in six games with the Sox so far in 2014 with one triple, one home run and eight RBIs. In a May 18 loss to the Winnipeg Goldeyes alone, Weik was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.

2014 is Weik’s second season with the Sox. In 2013, he earned American Association Rookie of the Year honors by appearing in 97 games and hitting .327 (128-for-392) with 32 doubles, three triples and seven home runs. The Grapevine, Texas resident had 81 RBIs, third best in the American Association. His .327 average ranked 10th in the American Association, only one point below his Amarillo teammate OF Chris Valencia, and his 32 doubles were good for fifth best among American Association hitters.

Weik, a former Texas Christian University Horned Frog, split 2012 with the Abilene Prairie Dogs and Edinburg Roadrunners of the North American Baseball League. In 91 combined games, he hit .340 with 12 home runs and 67 RBIs.

Weik played with the Arizona League Diamondbacks in 2011, appearing in 47 games with Arizona’s rookie level affiliate. He hit .266 with two home runs and 18 RBIs. That season followed a two-year career at TCU, where Weik transferred to from Weatherford Junior College. At TCU, Weik hit .357 with six home runs and 29 RBIs in 2010, and earned a spot on the all-regional team for the NCAA Tournament Fort Worth Regional. In his senior season in 2011, Weik hit .301 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs, appearing in 58 games and starting 55.
