Detroit, Mich. – Detroit Tigers righthanded pitcher Max Scherzer was named the 2013 American League Cy Young Award recipient on Wednesday, receiving 28 of 30 first-place votes.
Scherzer was the major leagues’ only 20-game winner this season, going 21-3 after starting the season 13-0. In his sixth season in the big leagues, the St. Louis native helped his team to the A.L. Championship Series with a 2.90 ERA and 240 strikeouts.
Scherzer began his professional career with Fort Worth of the American Association in 2007 after playing collegiately at the University of Missouri, appearing in three games for the Cats before being signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks’ organization.
